New Hope United Methodist Church has a yearly scholarship fund
of $6,000. The Umphlet Scholarship Fund is made possible by Dr. Thomas Leonard Umphlet, Margaret Douglass Umphlet, and Pattie Swift
Umphlet. The Scholarship Fund is administered by Dr. Umphlet’s cousin Thomas G. Douglass of the law firm Douglass & Douglass Attorneys in Raleigh, NC.
The Scholarship Fund is available to qualified college students who are members of New Hope United Methodist Church. New Hope UMC
can give between $500 up to $2,000 to each qualified student. The Church is allotted a total of $6,000 each year.

W. Marvin Ownley Receives Scholarship Award
On September 4, 2011 Yvonne Chambers of the New Hope UMC Scholarship Committee
presented Marvin Ownley with a check for $1,000.00 from the Umphlet Scholarship Fund. W. Marvin Ownley is the son of Wallace and Gretchen Ownley, the grandson of
Carson & Linda Spivey and Mary Lou Ownley, and the great-grandson of Eleanor Bass.
